Dr. Samantha Joy
Professor on UGA faculty since 1997
Today I attended a lecture on the recent information about the deepwater horizon oil spill. Dr. Joy was the speaker and she addressed many of the questions that were widely asked.
Deepwater Horizon
Dr. Joy had three goals that she and her faculty tried to accomplish on their recent cruise to the Gulf:
1.Track the plume to the deep horizon.
2.Document the concentration of oil in the water.
3. Evaluate the oxygen conjunctions.
Dr. Joy worked for 15 years at the Gulf of Mexico and has never seen concentrations as high. They increased tremendously, which has caused an outstanding amount of oxygen depletion and has a huge affect on the underwater creatures. She believes that the oil spill will only be cleaned up by nature and that can take months and even years. Dr. Joy will continue to seek new findings on the oil spill and monitor it closely.
